Class Descriptions

Our schedule and class names reflect the bilingual community of Viveka Yoga and Lachine. Some class names are French, others are English – all classes are lead bilingually and are open to anyone over the age of 16.


“Hatha” has a very open meaning and simply describes any kind of yoga involving physical exercises. The word “hatha” can be translated two ways: as “willful”or the yoga of activity, and as “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha), the yoga of balance.

Hatha yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in the Western world and while it can be used to help develop physical balance, strength and flexibility; it also a very mindful based practice that incorporates breath techniques and meditation to create an overall sense of wellbeing.



REVITALISER is an energetic class that explores physical poses and movements, breath techniques and moments of meditation in an open, vibrant and encouraging environment. This class will take you through both simple and challenging moments that are designed to leave you feeling refreshed in your body and mind.


RESTAURER is a healing and recuperative class that makes use of various props to help support the body through prolonged, simple poses. This class is perfect for anyone looking for a moment of peace and quiet or a more introspective practice and is designed to deeply relax the body, balance the nervous system and still the mind.


DOUX is a perfect class for anyone trying yoga for the first time or for those who are looking for a slower paced and softer approach to their practice. Simple yoga poses are combined with slow, gentle movements and breath techniques to promote balance in the body all while reducing stress and leaving you in a calm, aware state of mind.


EMPOWER is a dynamic, vigorous class that builds strength, flexibility and balance in the body. Unlock your body’s potential in a safe, peaceful environment that leaves you feeling strong and empowered from the inside out.


Strala is a Swedish word meaning “to radiate light” or to “shine bright”. Strala yoga is known for its laid-back, energetic and open vibe. All Strala classes move slowly and continuously, guided with deep breath and easygoing movement from your middle. All classes flow along to a playlist specifically designed to help you relax, feel inspired, and transport you further inward into exploring your body’s natural movement. All Strala classes have long-time practitioners next to relative beginners, and everybody gets to move easily from right where they are.

The Science of Strala

Strala is designed to activate your body’s Relaxation Response – a chemical cascade responsible for overall health, healing, and wellbeing. We activate our own Relaxation Response by moving gently and exploring where we are, rather than forcing to be somewhere else. We get happy, creative and intuitive. It feels amazing!

The Founders

Strala was created by Tara Stiles, drawing on her background in classical ballet and choreography, as well as her long-time personal practice in yoga. Tara trained with Paul Taylor Dance Company choreographer and dancer Eileen Cropley, and began her yoga study in the 1990s with her ballet teacher, Rory Foster of American Ballet Theater.

The science and movement of Strala is also guided by Mike Taylor. Mike studied mind-body medicine at Harvard, and complementary medicine at Oxford. He has practiced Eastern movement and healing, including tai chi and qi gong, for 30 years.

Strala’s approach to touch, support, and healing draws additionally from shiatsu master Sam Berlind, who lead the Ohashiatsu School in New York City for 20 years. Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese bodywork method, based on the principles of acupuncture. It has evolved into an innovative healing modality that incorporates movement, meditation, and connection.



Strala RELAX is a moving flow that releases tension in the body and mind, while resting the attention calmly on the breath, creating rejuvenation from the inside out.


Strala STRONG is a moving yoga flow that builds strength, balance, and flexibility evenly in the body, while a calm ease is carried through simple and challenging movements alike, leaving you in a centered, invigorated state.


Strala ENERGIZE is a moving yoga flow that invigorates the body and mind while resting attention calmly on the breath, creating an awakened, energized state.


Strala’s GENTLE class is a simple yoga flow tailored to open and strengthen the body and calm and ease the mind, creating a healthy range of motion in the body and a relaxed and focused mind.


Yin is a style of yoga that targets the connective tissues of the body. Static poses focusing on areas of the body that encompass a joint (ex: hips, sacrum, spine) are held in a soft, relaxed manner for several minutes allowing the practitioner to access the deep fascia networks of the body. During this class we invite you to be lead into a guided meditative experience through spoken word, breath techniques and visualization all in a warm, peaceful environment


Join us for 6 weeks of prenatal yoga classes designed to ease your aches and pains, calm your mind and build a positive connection to your body. All women in any stage of pregnancy are welcome. No prior yoga experience is required.

Over the course of 6 weeks you will practice postures, movements and breathing exercises designed specifically for pregnant woman. You will also have the opportunity to deepen your body awareness and your relationship with your baby.

Themes we will observe throughout the series include: mindfulness, movement, balance, birth preparation and self-love. This is also a great opportunity to meet other local moms-to-be and share your experiences.


The first year after baby’s born is special, amazing and beautiful. It’s time to learn about your baby and yourself in this new role as a parent. In these classes, we will explore the intersection of motherhood and yoga. How can yoga help us navigate this new time? We’ll bond with other moms and get back in shape while respecting our bodies. Babies are often incorporated into our postures. Babies will learn their own asana and sometimes receive simple massage, instructed by Emily. All classes end with a well-deserved relaxation. All levels. No yoga experience necessary
